Balaídos was built in the early 1920s and opened in 1928, making it one of the older surviving top-flight football stadiums in Spain. It hosted three group-stage matches during the 1982 FIFA World Cup, cementing its place in Spanish football history. In recent years it was renamed Abanca-Balaídos following a commercial naming-rights agreement with the Galician bank Abanca, though supporters widely continue to refer to it simply as Balaídos.
