The stadium was originally constructed in 1927, designed by architect Pere Domènech i Roura, and was intended to host the 1936 People's Olympics as an antifascist alternative to the Berlin Games — an event that never took place due to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. The venue was extensively rebuilt in the late 1980s by architects Vittorio Gregotti and Federico Correa ahead of the 1992 Summer Olympics, retaining the original neoclassical façade whilst modernising the interior. It hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of those Games, cementing its place in sporting history. The stadium was renamed in honour of Lluís Companys, the Catalan president executed by Franco's regime in 1940.
